America’s youth has a weight problem….

Look at this crap. This is a kid’s meal from O.u.t.b.a.c.k

I checked their website and there is no nutritional information listed. I was just curious to see what exactly that thing consists of. It comes on the same size plate as the “adult” meal.

Needless to say while on travel this week, I had the luxury of grabbing a value meal from Mc Don’s aka the g.olden a.rches and I noticed they put nutritional info on their boxes.

So as Fresh is indulging in french fries (because they are the best), I noticed the nutritional content.

The thing read 20g of FAT. I lost my appetite.

Wanna know how nutritious your favorite meal is?…Check it out…http://app.mcdonalds.com/bagamcmeal?process=menuitems

OSAG – that’s one of my nicknames for Operation Shrink A Gut….OSAG get it? (I hope y’all are not that slow). You know how rappers have like 8 different names..Jay-Z – HOVA- Jigga. Well, so will OSAG aka Gutless aka ahhhh I can’t think of anything else right now…..

So here’s my update….

The last couple of weeks was basically an introductory period for me. Body meets Exercise. Exercise meets Body. See exercise and body had this real crazy love/hate relationship. In the past they didn’t get a long too well. So I had to play Cupid. Hook them up. I told them to start slow. Get to know one other. Establish a foundation. Develop lines of communication. And that’s what they did.

I also introduced Body to Diet. You know Diet. She’s funny. Real picky. Doesn’t like to go by her real name so she’d prefer I call her Eat Right (get your mind out the gutter!) Body and Eat Right. Yeah. Eat Right’s cousin Poison has been in Body’s life for some time now. Poison got that crazy body but no ambition. She’s not wifey material. Just something you “hit” when you need it. Problem is Poison has been known to get around. Everybody knows her. But Eat Right. She’s special. She’s the one you settle down with. With Eat Right, you gotta work hard to get her. You gotta pay attention and stay on your game. She’s no nonsense but once you get her, the rewards are endless.

Translation:

I spent the last couple of weeks easing into this. I took note of what I was eating so I know what to avoid. I did research on foods. I read articles, books. I read labels now. Who knew my favorite Ice Tea had so much damn sugar?!?!? I’ll share some of this info on future posts. As for working out, again, I’m easing into it. I have realistic expectations this time. You can’t go to the gym one time and do one set of situps and think your gut is gonna disappear!!!!! For the last couple of weeks, I’ve done full-body circuit workouts with 30 seconds of rest between each exercise 3 times a week. All to let my Body know that this shit is real. This week, I turned it up a notch. Next week another notch. On my non-weight lifting days, I’ve started jogging. First of all, let me say this, I used to think running for sport was stupid. Not anymore. I’ve ran on the track at the local community college. I’ve started running in my neighborhood and I judge my progress by how many times I can go around without getting tired. Yep, I started at 1 but I would run 1, then walk 1, then run 1, then walk 1. Interval workouts.

Where I’m at:

Honestly, I’ve already noticed a difference and so have other people. My arms and legs are getting some definition. My energy level is up. I don’t feel as sluggish as I did before and most of all, since I workout first thing in morning, I can deal with all the bullshit at work and not get stressed. You see OSAG saves me from slapping the shit out of the dumb ass co-worker. Can’t beat that…It’s amazing what exercise does for your attitude.

So like I said, now I’m turning it up. Weights increase. Cardio increase. I need to increase my water intake. Fresh and water don’t mix like two chicks and no d*ck (for all my Biggie fans).

65 days left (till Fresh gets wiser by a year and the gut disappears)

A’ight so all of those that signed up to be down….Where you at? Let’s hear the updates. Even if you didn’t do anything, say it. Even if you ate one carrot, say it. Don’t make me call y’all out…..

Nah, I’m playing. This shit is real.

In fact, if you look and listen carefully, it’s all around you.

The 50 million pound challenge – Dr. Ian Smith.

Celebrity Fit Club.

You get the point.

More and more people are getting on the weight loss kick. And right fully so. Health in the African-American community is an issue. One that should not be overlooked. Our community suffers from a lack of health education.

Do you know what HDL/LDL and what it’s measured for?

Do you know what your blood pressure is?

Do you know your BMI?

How much body fat do you have?

When is the last time you went to the doctor for a physical?

And if you freaky deaky like that, do you know your status?

I can answer all of these. A lot of people can’t. A lot of people can’t even answer the last two, especially the brothers. Some of us are ignorant when it comes to health. We don’t get regular checkups. We only go if our last nut is hanging off and even then I guarantee you some of us will just fight through the pain and say something like “I just need to rest and drink some Ginger Ale”.

Real talk. I’m back in the gym.

I was at lunch the other day and I ate so much. Damn Cajun food was good as hell. But when I was finished, I felt like crap. So I’m walking all slow back to the office, and when I walk past a shiny car and see my reflection in the mirror, I see the artist formerly known as my stomach. Now it’s officially a gut. Damn.

See I’m an off and on gym rat. I’ll admit it. One minute I’m real good. Consistent. But about a month or so ago, I sprained my wrist playing ball (landed on it) and since then I haven’t done one ounce of athletic activity but finger to the remote. 30 is not the new 20 when you get injured. Shit takes longer to heal.

But after that reflection (literally), I’m back on the gym kick. I should have never left it in the first place but hey, things happen.

Let me be clear. I’m not overweight. I just have a gut and as a former high school/college athlete, it’s enough to light a fire in my ass just like when the doctor told me some years back that my cholesterol was borderline high. When I heard that news, I made working out part of my daily routine and smashed that cholesterol problem. So now it’s my gut.

Hey Fresh, why are you making such a big deal over your gut? Well let me break it down like this.

My gut = stomach fat = visceral fat = heart disease and/or type 2 diabetes. Don’t believe me? Do a google search on the words “visceral fat”

I’m not trying to be like my father or his father or mother or any one else in my family popping pills in the morning to keep my blood pressure down or prevent any other illness.

I’m concerned though. Concerned about my peoples. Concerned that you get tired walking up a flight of steps. Concerned that you just eat whatever the hell you want, when you want. It’s about more than just exercise. It’s about what you eat too. I’m not telling people to go out and get six packs. But I am telling you to go get healthy.

Ladies I know you like the thick look but be thick and healthy. And Fellas, go to the doctor. Ladies, make your man go to the doctor cause you know we can be ignorant sometimes…(yes…just sometimes).

This post is getting long already. I was going to include my workout but I’ll save that for another posts. In fact, I’ll even post some of the stuff I’ve learned about exercise and eating right.

Don’t worry, I’m not trying to turn my blog into personal training session though.
